One for the true connoisseur, a guided ascent of Pillar Rock provides a fantastic day out in the Lake District. We will usually start the day at Wasdale Head - spiritual home of Lake District mountaineering, and head up to Black Sail pass before heading out along the unlikely looking High Level route. We get our first real view of Pillar Rock as we approach the historic Robinson's Cairn. From here we get a good look at our route and the excitement builds as we scramble over and above Shamrock Buttress, towards the base of Slab and Notch Route.
Pillar Rock - the only mountain top in England which can only be reached by rock climbing!
Classified as a Nuttall and a Birkett (and featuring on numerous other mountain lists) Pillar Rock is the only peak in England which does not have a walkable route to the top. The summit can only be reached by following a rock climbing route, the easiest being Slab and Notch Route, graded Moderate.
For the peak baggers and list-tickers amongst us (you know who you are....) climbing Pillar Rock often represents the culmination of many years work. For many of our clients it's the last summit in that long list and is the cause for much celebration - one of the reasons I enjoy guiding Pillar Rock so much.

Slab and Notch Route (Moderate)
Graded Moderate, Slab and Notch Route is the easiest of many climbs on Pillar Rock. With plenty of big holds and comfortable stances, this route is achievable by most fit and active hill walkers, and some scrambling or climbing experience will obviously help. After celebrations, we will normally descend by abseil from the summit, making this a truly memorable mountaineering experience.
